Maskeliya Oya, a significant tributary of the Kelani River, creates the magnificent waterfall that drops down from a height of 413 feet. Laxapana Falls is the 625th highest in the world and the 8th highest in Sri Lanka.
According to folk tales, Buddha repaired his saffron robe when visiting Adam’s Peak. The name of the falls is derived from the Sinhala words “Laxa” and “Pana,” which both signify “lamps” in that language.
The falls is a spray of silvery foam set against a backdrop of lush vegetation, and it flows to create an amazing natural pool at the base.

The Twin hydroelectric power plants, Old Laxapana Power Station, which produces 50 MW of power, and New Laxapana Power Station, which produces 100 MW of power, are named after the fall. Because of the water’s speed, it is a challenging waterfall to trek and caution should be used when swimming.
No doubt, that the route between Norton Bride and Maskeliya offers a breathtaking view of the fall. Keep in mind to take the route leading from Polpitiya Power Station if you wish to get closer. If not, follow the route from Maskeliya to Norton Bridge; after 13 kilometres, a side road will lead you to Kottalena and the fall.
Many visitors climb to the top to take pictures of the area where the fall will occur. At the top, there is also an observation point. By taking the Hatton-Maskelya and travelling to the Pathana village, one can also visit the fall. Although the view of the falls from above is breathtaking, go to the bottom to fully appreciate the falls.
How to Reach Laxapana Falls Sri Lanka
Laxapana Falls is a captivating waterfall located near Kiriwan Eliya village in the Nuwara Eliya area of Sri Lanka, whereas,
- 17 km from Maskeliya
- 31 km from Hattan
- 70 km from Nuwara Eliya
The travel to the waterfall takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes if you live in the Nuwara Eliya region. As usual, you may find the Laxapana Falls entrance using Google Maps. Since it’s not quite obvious where the trailhead is, its better if you can get an instruction from the locals.
Kandy Or Nuwara Eliya to Laxapana Falls
Also, it’s possible to get to the waterfall from Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, despite the large distance! Expect the trip to last between two and three hours each way!

Best time to visit Laxapana waterfall Sri Lanka

The hike is a quick one (100 meters or so). You should just need five minutes to complete it.

At Laxapana Falls, is swimming permitted?
Around the waterfall, you’ll find several pools in which you can cool off and take a dip. Since the waterfall doesn’t plunge into the pool immediately, you can swim just beneath the falls because it is the largest pool there.
Please take care of this area! Going behind or under the waterfall is extremely risky due to its strength.
